The dark brown neck pit Bock or pit neck Bock , box Bock or role Schröter ( Arhopalus rusticus , Syn. : Criocephalus rusticus ) is a beetle from the family of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae).
features
The beetles become 10 to 30 millimeters long. They are light brown to black in color, have soft-skinned wings with two to three weak longitudinal ribs. On the sides of the neck shield each is an indentation. The eyes are very large and clearly protruding. In contrast to the very similar species Arhopalus ferus , Arhopalus rusticus has occasional hairs between the ommatidia of the eyes (Fig. 1).
Occurrence
They are found in coniferous forests in Europe and Asia . They are common in northern and eastern Germany, but rare in the south and west.
Way of life
The beetles fly from July to September. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day they hide under loose bark . The larvae live in pine stumps , under the bark or on the roots of dead pines, but rarely also on other conifers . The females lay their eggs in damaged trees. At first, the larvae only drill into the bast, later they penetrate the wood. They pupate after 2 to 3 years. It happens that the beetles hatch from wood that has already been processed.
