Ariel Hauptmeier (* 1969 in Bad Oeynhausen ) is a German journalist and book author . He heads the Reutlingen reporting school and the Reporter Forum, which awards the German Reporter Prize .

Career

After attending the Henri Nannen School , Hauptmeier worked as a freelance reporter for five years, repeatedly setting out on extensive trips abroad, for example to Brazil, Micronesia, Argentina and Paraguay. In Colombia, he managed to interview Carlos Castaño Gil , the head of the paramilitary AUC who was murdered a little later. Equipped with a Gabriel Grüner scholarship, he and the photographer Heinrich Völkel traveled to Morocco several times to meet African migrants before their crossing to Europe. The resulting reports have appeared in ZEIT and SZ-Magazin, among others.

In 2004 he became editor at Geo and Geo Special and continued to report mainly from abroad: from India, for example, from Israel, Greenland and Peru.

In 2007, together with Cordt Schnibben and Stephan Lebert, he founded the Reporter Forum, a network of journalists that has been awarding the German Reporter Award every year since 2009 and organizing the Reporter Workshop, an industry meeting where 300 reporters talk about their craft and projects to discuss.

In 2014, Hauptmeier moved to the Correctiv research center as head of text and in 2017 in the same position to the Swiss online magazine Republik . In 2019 he took over the management of the Reutlingen Reportage School with Philipp Maußhardt .
