Ariel Zhitnitsky

Ariel R. Zhitnitsky ( Russian Ариэль Житницкий ) is a Soviet theoretical physicist working in Canada.

Zhitnitsky received his doctorate from Novosibirsk University and was there from 1980 to 1995 at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. In 1989 and 1992 he was at CERN , in 1990 at the Institute for Advanced Study , in 1991 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, from 1993 at Uppsala University and in 1995 at SLAC . From 1995 he is at the University of British Columbia , where he is a professor.

He deals with particle physics, astroparticle physics, vacuum structure of non-Abelian gauge field theories and quantum chromodynamics under extreme conditions, dark matter and dark energy, axions . In the 1980s he developed a model with an almost invisible axion to solve the strong CP problem (also called the DFSZ model after the first letters of Michael Dine , Willy Fischler , Mark Srednicki and Zhitnisky). With VL Chernyak he introduced light cone wave functions for exclusive QCD interactions at high energies (CZ wave function). With D. Son he investigated anomalous non-scattering currents (of topological origin) in dense matter with the help of an effective field theory. He investigated their possible role in superconductivity and kicks in neutron stars and in explaining dark matter as being composed of antibaryons. With Dmitri Kharzeev he explained in 2007 CP-odd quantum anomalies in QCD matter (observed in heavy ion collisions, for example at RHIC). In 2018 he proposed the emergence of inflationary de Sitter universes as a consequence of a topologically non-trivial sector of QCD-like gauge field theories.

In 2002 he received the Killam Research Prize and in 2003 was a Killam Fellow. In 2018 he received the CAP-CRM Prize .
