The Wells Fargo Arena is a multi-purpose hall on the campus of Arizona State University in the US city of Tempe in the state of Arizona . Tempe is a suburb of the capital Phoenix . The university's sports department, the Arizona State Sun Devils ( NCAA - Pac-12 ), uses the hall for various sporting events.
history
The foundation stone for what was then the ASU Activity Center was laid in 1972 in the immediate vicinity of the Sun Devil Stadium . Until it opened on April 29, 1974, the hall was designed and further developed by the architectural firm Drover, Welch & Lindlan, Inc., and constructed by the Olson Construction Company and built at a cost of eight million US dollars . The arena is 400 feet (122 meters) long and 340 feet (104 meters) wide. Initially it held 14,227 visitors. It offers a training and a weight room as well as an equipment room. There are also changing rooms for the athletes and offices. As the last innovation so far, the arena received a modern video cube with four screens measuring 12 × 8 feet (about 3.66 × 2.44 meters).
In 1997, the acquired financial services company Wells Fargo in San Francisco the naming rights to the event hall. Since 2010, 10,754 seats have been available to visitors. A photovoltaic system was installed on the roof . Various Sun Devils teams are based at the Wells Fargo Arena. The basketball men and women, both volleyball teams as well as the gymnasts and wrestlers are represented in the hall.
Arizona State University plans to renovate or replace the aging hall. First, however, the more than 250 million US dollar modernization of the Sun Devil Stadium should be completed by summer 2017. Ray Anderson, the vice president of ASU's sports division, stated in May 2016 that work on the renovation or a new build could begin in late 2017 or early 2018.
