Arctinos from Miletus
Arktinos von Milet or Arktinos Milesios ( Greek Ἀρκτῖνος Μιλήσιος / Arktîːnos Milɛ́ːsios /) was an ancient Greek epic , of whom only the name has come down, his works are lost. Usually his creative period is between 775 and 741 BC. Assumed that Homer was his teacher. The ancient philosopher Phainias of Eresus, however, dates his life to the seventh century BC. And states that he was defeated by the author of the Little Iliad , Lesches , in a singing competition. Arktinos is said to have written the Cyclic epics Aithiopis and Iliu persis , as well as the Naupaktia . All these works are lost, but a chrestomathy attributed to Proclus gives an outline of the first two works.
