Armin Löwe

Armin Löwe (born October 17, 1922 in Meißen ; † October 23, 2001 in Heidelberg ) is considered the father of pediatric audiology in Germany and a pioneer of auditory-verbal education .

Life

During the Second World War , Löwe was taken prisoner from 1945 to 1947. After his release, he trained as a primary school teacher in Heidelberg . A few months of practical experience as a primary school teacher was followed by two years of additional training at the seminar for deaf and dumb teachers from 1949 to 1951 , which at the time was associated with Heidelberg University .

1951-1959 he was a teacher at the school for the deaf in Heidelberg. In 1959, Löwe founded the first pediatric audiological advice center for parents of hearing impaired children in Heidelberg, which he headed until 1966. At the same time he was the editor of an annual newsletter in the field of early education and parenting. 1959–1990 he was editor of the magazine “hearing impaired children”.

1966–1970 he taught as a lecturer at the Heidelberg University of Education and from 1969 as a lecturer at the then Institute for Hearing, Speech and Visually Impaired Education. In 1970 he was appointed professor for pedagogical audiology at the University of Education in Heidelberg and in 1973 he was also appointed professor for deaf education.

He devoted his entire career to promoting speech for deaf and hard of hearing children. Leo was a proponent of the school integration of hearing-impaired children and adolescents. He laid the foundation stone for the promotion of hearing and speech development in early childhood hearing-impaired children in Germany and was particularly committed to the early support of hearing-impaired children.

Löwe wrote numerous specialist books and essays on the subject of childhood hearing loss , which have been translated into numerous European languages. He was internationally active and gave guest lectures in more than thirty countries around the world.

Awards

  • In 2002 he was (posthumously) awarded the "Sunshine Medal - Growing Together" from the Theodor Hellbrügge Foundation for his life's work.
