Arnald was a monk of the Benedictine Abbey of Kelso in south-east Scotland. After Herbert , the first abbot of the monastery founded a few years earlier, was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Glasgow in 1147 , Arnald was elected as the new abbot of the monastery. After Abbot Waltheof von Melrose had rejected the office of Bishop of the Diocese of St Andrews in 1159 , King Malcolm IV sent his Chamberlain Nicholas and Bishop William of Moray to the Curia in order to achieve the elevation of the diocese to archdiocese. The new Pope Alexander III. but did not want to annoy Archbishop Roger of York and the English King Henry II , who determined the sovereignty of the English Church over the Scottish dioceses. Therefore the Pope rejected the proposal of the Scottish King, but appointed Bishop William as papal legate . He wished that William would be elected as the new bishop of St Andrews and had decreed that the new bishop would subsequently become papal legate for Scotland. After William returned to Scotland, the king ignored the Pope's request and appointed Arnald, Abbot of Kelso, as the new bishop. Arnald was formally elected by the cathedral chapter on November 13, 1160 and ordained bishop on November 20 by Bishop William by virtue of his office as a legate. As a result, he handed him the office of legate. In this capacity, Arnald ordained Gregory as the new Bishop of Ross . To this end, he began to rebuild St Andrews Cathedral in 1160 . After Arnald's death he was buried in the old church of St Regulus next to the new cathedral.
