Arnd Adje Both

Arnd Adje Both (* 1971 in Remscheid ) is a German music archaeologist with a research focus on the musical cultures of Mesoamerica .

Life

Arnd Adje Both studied ancient American studies and ethnology at the Free University of Berlin . For his master's thesis "The musical culture of the late post-classical period in Mesoamerica: Perspectives of Music Archeology" (1999) he received the Rudolf Virchow Prize of the Berlin Society for Anthropology , Ethnology and Prehistory . After research stays in Mexico he received his doctorate with a thesis on the musical instruments unearthed at the main temple of the Aztecs . Teaching assignmentsat the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin in the subjects of Ancient American Studies and Social and Cultural Anthropology and at the University of Hamburg in the subject of Mesoamerican Studies . Re-archiving of tape recordings and shellac record collections in the phonogram archive of the Ethnological Museum Berlin and in the sound archive of the Humboldt University in Berlin . Conference manager and head of the editorial office of the International Study Group in Music Archeology at the German Archaeological Institute. Organization of international conferences in Berlin (2004, 2006, 2008) and co-editor of Studies in Music Archeology (2006, 2008) . Since 2007 chair of the Study Group on Music Archeology of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) and organization of international conferences in New York (2009), Valladolid (2011) and Guatemala (2013). Between 2008 and 2012 scientific curator at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim, there supervising the collection of archaeological and ethnographic musical instruments as well as member of the board of trustees of the exhibition MusikWelten. Continuation of various research projects in Mexico. In 2010 co-founder of the EU-funded music archaeological EMAProject, since 2013 exhibition curator of the planned traveling exhibition with employment at the German Archaeological Institute Berlin. End of 2012 founding of Ekho-Verlag, a specialist publisher with a focus on the research area of ​​music archeology, as well as general editor and co-editor of various book series on the subject.
