Arnot Tower is a ruined castle about 1.5 km from the village of Scotlandwell in the Scottish administrative division of Perth and Kinross . It is considered a Scheduled Monument .

history

Fortifications have existed on the site since around 1400, but the current building was constructed around 1507. The residential tower has four floors and a vaulted cellar . The Arnot family , whose documentary mention goes back to 1105, had it built. David Arnot from Fyfe ( Fife ) was one of 2000 noble landowners who had to swear allegiance to King Edward I of England in 1296 . Nicol Arnot was a loyal supporter of the Scottish King Robert the Bruce . Robert Arnot died in 1514 at the Battle of Flodden Field . The Arnots gave up the old tower around 1700.

In 1760, local poet Michael Bruce wrote a poem about the true story of the love affair between a daughter of the Arnot family and a son of the Balfour family from nearby Burleigh Castle . The families were at odds. It is thought that the Arnot daughter fled to Burleigh Castle.
