Arnt Beeldsnider

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnt Beeldsnider , also Arnt van Zwolle or Arnt von Kalkar (* before 1450 ; † 1492 ), was a Dutch sculptor and can be traced back to Kalkar from 1460 onwards. In the last quarter of the 15th century, sculpture on the Lower Rhine was mainly influenced by this sculptor. He was mainly active in the Nikolaikirche (Kalkar) in Kalkar and in Zwolle and it is from these two places that he got his name in art history. In what is now the Netherlands, he created altars and figures of saints of particular quality with his carvings.

In 1484 he lost several close relatives as a result of a plague epidemic and moved to Zwolle. There he continued his workshop, which shaped the style of late Gothic sculpture in the Lower Rhine-Dutch border area for decades. It was so indispensable that Kalkar commissioned him to continue the George Altarpiece, which was begun in 1480. He is not only responsible for the George Altar in Kalkar, but also for the first phase of the high altar, which he left unfinished in his studio when he died in 1492.

The sculptural work of the master Arnt is characterized by an extremely exciting and at the same time graceful figure style, which he gives a graphic character through the hard, detailed treatment of the surface. Arnt Beeldsnider worked on his works of art at the end of the Middle Ages, when copper engraving and woodcut came to the fore as a separate genre for the first time in art history and thus also influenced other art forms.

Under the title Arnt der Bilderschneider - Master of Inspired Sculptures , the Museum Schnütgen is showing the first monographic exhibition on this artist from June 25 to September 20, 2020. One reason for this was that the altar panel in the museum with the Adoration of the Magi in 2019 could be supplemented by three fragments believed to be lost. The highlights of the exhibition include the exhibit Lamentation of Christ from the Musée de Cluny in Paris , the photo reproduction of the twelve figures of saints on the choir stalls of the former Klever Minoritenkirche St. Maria Conception and the five meter wide George altar from Kalkar.
