Arraias

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Arraias were native Timorese who served as auxiliary troops to the colonial rulers during the Portuguese colonial era. The name is derived from the Portuguese word Arraial ( hiking group ). The Timorese called them in Tetum Assuain ( hero ). They were provided by the loyal liurais (petty kings) or directly recruited by the Portuguese. Until 1818, they were the only troops the Portuguese had in their possession. From 1860 on, permanent units from Moradores , Bidau and Sica were set up.
