The Arrissoules tunnels along with the Pomy Tunnel , the longest tunnel in the Swiss A1 motorway , the main artery of Switzerland.
It is located in French-speaking Switzerland on the Bern – Lausanne section between the Estavayer-le-Lac and Yverdon-les-Bains connections . The two-tube tunnel measures 2987 meters and is located partly in the territory of the canton of Friborg and partly in the canton of Vaud . It crosses under several fields, strips of forest and farming villages (including the town of Arrissoules ) in the gently undulating western Swiss plateau.
The tunnel was built as part of the expansion of the last section of the A1 between Payerne and Yverdon-les-Bains. It was opened in 2001 after several years of construction. Not only topographical, but also environmental causes were responsible for the construction of this relatively long tunnel.
