Arrondissement of Saint-Martin-Saint-Barthélemy
The Arrondissement Saint-Martin-Saint-Barthélemy (also Arrondissement des Îles du Nord ) is a former arrondissement of the French overseas department of Guadeloupe . It was established in 1963 and comprised the communities of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy with the cantons of Saint-Martin-1 , Saint-Martin-2 and Saint-Barthélemy . It was the only one of the French arrondissements that had no main town ; the sub-prefecture was housed in Marigot and had a branch in Gustavia .
At the last census of 1999 the arrondissement had 35,930 inhabitants on an area of 74.2 km² and a population density of 484 inhabitants per km². With the spin-off of the two former municipalities as independent bodies ( COM ) in 2007, the Arrondissement Saint-Martin - Saint-Barthélemy was dissolved. Nevertheless, the state can still be represented in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy by the Prefect of Guadeloupe; instead of a sub-prefect, the Préfet délégué supports him .
