The Art Gallery of South Australia is located in Adelaide and with 38,000 works is one of the largest art collections in Australia .

collection

The collection, founded in 1881, ranges from ancient Roman times to the present day. It includes plants from Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. Paintings, sculptures , prints , photographs , artistically designed textiles, ceramics, glass and metal work and jewels are on display.

Australian art on display includes works from 1800 onwards and Aboriginal art . Art from Europe from the late 15th century to the present day is also on display, as well as works of art from Great Britain and 12 countries in Asia, including Cambodia , the People's Republic of China , India , Indonesia , Iran , Japan , Thailand and Vietnam .

In 1922, this art museum began collecting works on the art of photography as the first museum in Australia . The museum is the only museum in Australia to have a room on Islamic art .

Buildings

The art museum has been around since 1881, and the first building of this museum opened in the early 1900s. In 1936, the two Melrose Wings and another wing of the building were added to the rear in 1962, as was the West Wing in March 1996 .

The West Wing houses the contemporary art exhibition, a bookshop, restaurant and other rooms. The Art Gallery is on North Terrace and is close to the State Library of South Australia , the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide .
