The Artek Oy is a Finnish furniture manufacturer and international trading company with headquarters in Helsinki . Artek is part of the Swiss Vitra group .

history

Artek was founded in 1935 by the designer Alvar Aalto , his wife Aino Aalto , the art patron Maire Gullichsen and the art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl . The business idea of ​​the company's founders was to "sell furniture and promote modern living culture through exhibitions and other educational measures". Artek furniture can be found in public spaces, private houses, museums, schools, hotels and offices.

Building on the foundations created by Alvar Aalto, Artek is the protagonist of modern design and one of the most innovative companies in Finland.

The Artek product range includes furniture, furnishings and lamps by Alvar Aalto. Artek includes a wide range of designer furniture made of wood. The company has sales offices in New York City , Berlin , Stockholm and Tokyo . Artek Deutschland GmbH was opened in 2012 in the former Tagesspiegel building in Berlin and is Artek's European sales center.

On September 6, 2013, the Swiss company Vitra acquired the Finnish company Artek. However, the activities will continue to operate under the Artek brand name.
