Common interosseous artery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The common interosseous artery ("common interosseous artery ") is an artery in the forearm . In humans it is a branch of the ulnar artery , in domestic animals it is a branch off the brachial artery . It owes its name to its location in the interosseous gap ( Spatium interosseum antebrachii ) or the syndesmotic connection between ulna and radius ( Membrana interossea antebrachii ).

Interbone arteries on the human forearm

The common interosseous artery divides into two main branches on the forearm: the anterior and posterior interosseous arteries , known in domestic animals as the cranial and caudal interosseous arteries . Both interosseous arteries anastomose distally in the interosseous space.

Anterior interosseous artery

The anterior interosseous artery or cranial interosseous artery ("anterior interosseous artery ") runs on the front of the anterior interosseous membrane . It supplies the flexor muscles (flexors) on the forearm and releases branches to the rete carpi dorsale . In ruminants and horses , it is the stronger of the two main branches.

Posterior interosseous artery

The posterior interosseous artery or caudal interossea artery ("posterior interosseous artery ") runs on the posterior side of the antebrachial interosseous membrane . It supplies the extensor muscles on the forearm and opens into the vascular arches ( superficial palmar arc and profund palmar arc ) at the origin of the metacarpal arteries . In predators and pigs , it is significantly stronger than the front one.
