George Arthur Atkinson (born September 30, 1909 in Goole , † July 14, 1983 ibid) was an English football player .

Career

Atkinson represented Yorkshire County during his school years and subsequently played for Goole LMS , a works team for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway , in the Goole and District Football League . In the summer of 1930 he moved to Goole Town in the Yorkshire League , in December 1930 he came as a test player to the second division Lincoln City , a month later he received a professional contract there. He was next to Stanley Denby and Charlie McDermott one of three players from the local Goole & District League, who made the leap into the professional camp in the early 1930s.

Presented on his move as a half- forward, he initially played for a long time in the reserve team, only on Christmas Eve 1932 did he come to right winger against Bradford Park Avenue (final score 2: 2) for his first competitive game for the first team of Lincoln and scored a goal. Two days later, on Boxing Day , he was also successful as a goalscorer in a 5-3 win over Chesterfield . By March 1933 he made a total of nine league appearances and scored four goals, mostly coach Harry Parkes put on Alf Horne or Phil Cartwright on the right wing. At the end of the season he was allowed a free transfer by Lincoln.

A little later, Atkinson joined the league rivals Hull City . After a failure to agree on a contract extension with the previous winger Fred Forward , he signed two new right wingers: Atkinson and Andy Mitchell . Atkinson made his debut for Hull on his 24th birthday, but was only used sporadically in the first team and was cleared for a free transfer at the end of the season after five goalless competitive appearances.

He found a new club with Mansfield Town , which played in the Football League Third Division North . At Mansfield he established himself from the start in the storm line and was mostly used as a right half-forward. Atkinson was one of Mansfield's top eleven for three seasons, played 120 of 126 possible league games and scored at least ten goals in all three seasons. In his third season at Mansfield, his coach was Harry Parkes again, Atkinson was one of the guarantees that center forward Ted Harston scored 55 league goals. Nevertheless, he was not renewed at the end of the season and had to leave the club.

He found a new employer within the league with Southport FC , against whom he stood out in the preseason in the jersey of Mansfield both as a goal scorer and as a template provider. At Southport he was initially set as a "busy half-striker" and regularly prepared goals for center forward Joe Patrick in the 1937/38 season . Later in the season he was repeatedly called up on the left wing , including in the final in Haig Avenue at home for the Football League Third Division North Cup against Bradford City , as Southport with the storm series Albert Stapleton - Harry Hampson - Joe Patrick - Alf Miller - Atkinson won the title with a 4-1 win.

At the end of the season, Atkinson rejected the terms of the contract offered by Southport and the club also allowed him a free transfer. He then returned to Yorkshire and found a job with Thorne Colliery and for whose football team he played in the Yorkshire League. In March 1939 he belonged to a league selection that played a game against the famous amateur team Corinthians , Atkinson contributed with a goal to the 4-2 victory of the league selection. Presumably he played for Thorne Colliery until after the Second World War and later held the office of club secretary.

After his career, Atkinson ran a shop in Goole before taking early retirement due to angina pectoris . He died of a heart attack in 1983 at the age of 73 .
