Arthur Birch (Jockey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arthur Birch (* 1875 in Bonehill , Tamworth in Staffs , † February 3, 1911 in Seville House, Victoria Drive, Eastbourne ) was a British jockey .

Life

Arthur Birch worked as a roving jockey. In 1904 he rode Moifaa when he surprisingly won the Grand National . In 1905 he was supposed to ride the horse again in the same race as a replacement for the actually booked jockey George Williamson, but could not be reached in time. Moifaa was unsuccessful in the 1905 Grand National.

A little later, in December 1906, Birch crashed with Black Ivory in Gatwick . The horse that followed, Cade II, jumped on him while he was on the ground. If Birch had survived an accident with Jack Spratt five days earlier unscathed, he now injured his spine and remained paralyzed. A year after the accident, a newspaper reported that Birch is "doing very well, although he would be quite helpless due to the paralysis beyond the hip, but his wife would look after herself at all times". It was also reported that the jockey had four children and received five dollars a week from Black Ivory's owner, Mr. Cohn . He died as a result of the accident in early 1911. Arthur Birch competed in more than 1,000 races as a jockey.
