Arthur John Rowledge

Arthur John Rowledge (born July 30, 1876 in Peterborough , † December 11, 1957 ) was a British engineer.

During the First World War he worked at Napier & Son and was instrumental in the creation of the Napier Lion . For this work he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire . Rowledge joined Rolls-Royce in 1921 as chief engineer in the aircraft engine division , where he was the first to drive the development of the Rolls-Royce Condor when he designed the much improved Mk. III. Later he was responsible for the successful designs of the Rolls-Royce Kestrel and the Rolls-Royce R types, with which Great Britain managed to win the Schneider Trophy . He later worked on the development of the air-cooled Rolls-Royce Exe and Rolls-Royce Pennine , but was also involved in the development of the Rolls-Royce Merlin . In 1941 he became a member of the Royal Society . Rowledge stayed with Rolls-Royce until the end of World War II in 1945.
