Arthur Lanc

Arthur Lanc (born March 20, 1907 in Vienna ; † May 20, 1995 in Gmünd , Lower Austria ) was the medical officer in Gmünd and was responsible for looking after all Jewish forced laborers in the Gmünd area. However, they were not allowed to be given any medication. Lanc, however, together with the veterinarian Krisch, siphoned off the medicines they had been given for the Jews and also helped three Jews to escape from a camp in Gmünd. They managed to survive the Nazi terror in a hiding place in the attic of the Weißensteiner white tannery in Hoheneich . Lanc and his wife Maria Lanc received the honorary title “ Righteous Among the Nations ” from Yad Vashem . In 2016, Lancplatz in Vienna- Leopoldstadt (2nd district) was named after him and his wife.

Lanc was a member of the Catholic Austrian student union Donaumark Vienna ( Middle Schools Cartel Association ) and the Catholic Austrian University Association Nordgau Vienna ( Austrian Cartel Association ).

In this book there is the passage: “Dr. Lanc, active social democrat and member of the resistance movement against the Nazis, […] ”. Arthur Lanc was not a Social Democrat. He was a committed member of the Austrian Cartel Association ( K.Ö.HV Nordgau Wien ) and the Middle Schools Cartel Association (K.Ö.St.V. Donaumark Wien and KMV Leopoldina Gmünd). In addition, after the re-establishment of Austria, he headed the Gmünd CV district for years. From 1955 to 1970 he represented the Austrian People's Party in the Gmünder local council .
