Arthur Lindsay Sadler
Arthur Lindsay Sadler (born November 19, 1882 in Hackney , London , Middlesex , England , † July 13, 1970 in Braintree , Essex , England) was Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Sydney .
Sadler attended Dulwich College, the Merchant Taylors' School in London and St John's College in Oxford (BA, 1908; MA, 1911). He was a Pusey-Ellerton Fellow in Hebrew (1903), Kennicott Junior Fellow in Hebrew (1907), won the Junior Septuagint Prize (1907) and graduated summa cum laude in Oriental Languages (Hebrew and Assyrian) .
Between 1922 and 1948 Sadler was the Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Sydney. He also taught at the Royal Military College . His publications include A Short History of Japanese Architecture , Maker of Modern Japan: The Life of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Cha-No-Yu: The Japanese Tea Ceremony . He translated The Ten Foot Square Hut (the Hōjōki ), excerpts from the Heike Monogatari and The Code of The Samurai: Budo Shoshinshu into English.
After his retirement he returned to England and settled in the village of Great Bardfield in Essex . He associated with some of the Great Bardfield Artists including Edward Bawden (1903-1989), Stanley Clifford-Smith (1906-1988) and Michael Rothenstein (1908-1993). He spent his final years at Buck's House , Great Bardfield, which he had bought from his friend Stanley Clifford-Smith.
