Johann Arthur Severin Nikutowski (born January 9, 1830 in Salwarschienen , Prussian Eylau district (Polish: Kanie Iławieckie) in East Prussia , † 1888 in Düsseldorf ) was a genre, horse and battle painter of Polish descent. He belongs to the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

Life

Nikutowski began his painting studies in Königsberg , continued it at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Carl Friedrich Lessing , followed him to Karlsruhe in 1859 and finally settled in Düsseldorf in 1865. His first works were small-format genre pictures, later he mainly created large battle pictures, including episodes from the Polish January uprising in 1863. From 1880 until his death in 1888 he was a teacher of anatomy at the Düsseldorf Academy. This prompted him to study comparative anatomy and proportion theory, which were not published.

His passion was the representation of dynamic groups of riders and horses, which he embeds in tense actions and endows them with a pathos and verve that is only known from Russian painting.

His son Erich (1872–1921) also became a painter and devoted himself mainly to landscape painting.

Works (selection)

In the painting Wilde Fahrt (1855) he allows his Polish origins to flow and illustrates with vivid expressiveness the flight of the Poles from the Prussians. The snowy landscape in white and gray tones creates a magnetizing contrast to the dynamic composition of the fleeing group on the diagonal, whose excited expressiveness of people and horses seems to sweep the viewer away.

Livestock trading on a wintry market square (1881) impresses not only with its many figures, but also with the pathos of each individual person, whose posture and facial expressions reflect the cold winter and the dampness of the mass exhalations. It achieved a record price at a private auction in 2009.
