Arthur Edward Joseph Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough OBE TD ( June 30, 1884 - August 27, 1927 ) was a British politician and nobleman who inherited the title of Earl of Gainsborough in 1926 and thereby became a member of the House of Lords , to which he belonged until his death in 1927.

Life

Noel was the eldest son of Charles Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough and his second wife Mary Elizabeth Dease. He entered the diplomatic service in 1908, before he began his military service in the Territorial Army Reserve at the beginning of the First World War in 1914 . During the war he took part in combat missions in France and was most recently promoted to major . For his military services he was honored with the Territorial Decoration (TD) and in 1919 with the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). After the end of the war in 1919 he became the private chamberlain of Pope Benedict XV. as well as after his death in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.

After the death of his father on April 17, 1926 he inherited the title of 4th Earl of Gainsborough, in the County of Lincoln and the associated subordinate title of 4th Viscount Campden, of Campden in the County of Gloucester , 6. Baron Barham, of Barton Court and Teston in the County of Kent , 4th Baron Noel, of Ridlington in the County of Rutland and 6th Baronet Middleton, of Barham Court and Teston, in the County of Kent . This also made him a member of the House of Lords, to which he was a member until his death on August 27, 1927. At times he also served as a magistrate (justice of the peace) of Rutland .

His marriage to Alice Mary Eyre on November 10, 1915 resulted in a daughter and two sons. His eldest daughter Maureen Thérèse Josephine Noel was married to Charles Walter James Dormer, 15th Baron Dormer . His eldest son Anthony Gerard Edward Noel inherited the title of 5th Earl of Gainsborough and the associated titles after his death in 1927 at the age of four. His younger son Gerard Eyre Wriothesley Noel worked as a lawyer and authored several books on historical subjects and personalities.
