Arthur Broughton Sykes (born June 16, 1897 in Grimsby , † 1978 ) was an English football player .

Career

Sykes played after the First World War for the local club Grimsby Rovers and reached the final of the Lincolnshire Junior Cup with the team in 1920 . While he was still involved in the 4-1 semi-final win against Boston, he was not called up in the 0-2 final defeat against Cranwell RAF . In the fall of 1920 Sykes came as an amateur to the Football League Third Division South playing club Grimsby Town . In addition to appearances in the reserve team in the Midland League , he played for the first team on November 6, 1920 a league game at Swansea Town , when he replaced the injured Tommy Spink on the right winger position . The 1: 3 defeat in front of 16,000 spectators at Vetch Field , in which he had formed the storm line with Jim MacAuley , Harry Storer , George Morrall and Albert Smith , remained his only appearance.

As a result, he was again active for the Grimsby Rovers, on the occasion of a game in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup against Boston FC in December 1920, he was described as a "feared right winger". The Rovers were among the strongest teams in non-league football in Lincolnshire in the mid-1920s , in 1924 the team won the Lincolnshire Junior Cup (participation of Sykes unclear), in 1925 the team reached the final again (result unclear). In addition, the team was in the 1924 final for the Grimsby Hospital Cup (0: 1 against Grimsby Albion) and the Horncastle Cup (1: 2 against Horncastle Town), in the 2-0 final victory for the Kelley Cup against Spalding United in March In 1924 he scored the opening goal. For the 1926/27 season, the Rovers joined forces with Louth Town and entered the Louth League as Louth Town, in the fall of 1927 a takeover took place and the club returned under the name Grimsby Rovers, Sykes was still at this point active as a player.

Sykes also represented the Lincolnshire FA several times as a selection player , for example against Norfolk in January 1924 (final score 3: 2), in February 1924 (final score 1: 0) and in March 1925 (final score 1: 3, goal by Sykes), in In all three games he formed the right attacking side with Harry Kitching .
