Artur Speck (born June 19, 1877 in Pirna , † January 25, 1960 in Dresden ) was a German road construction engineer in Saxony and Ministerialrat in Dresden.

Life

Speck was a son of Pirna's senior teacher and historian Oskar Speck . During his studies in 1896 he became a member of the Erato Dresden singers . In the 1920s, as ministerial advisor and head of the road construction department in the Saxon Ministry of Finance, he developed concepts for the repair of the 3,600 km network of Saxon state roads. This enabled him to do justice to the emerging motor vehicle traffic. After the First World War, he coined the saying: "A poor people cannot afford the luxury of bad roads."

His construction of intersection-free connections on the "car only roads" (the later highways), known in specialist circles as "bacon rolls", has become known. He broke new ground by developing traffic counting methods as a basis for planning.

Artur Speck received his doctorate in 1907 with the subject "History and theory of suspension bridges". He worked scientifically and in teaching at the Technical University of Dresden , where he became honorary senator in 1928. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1954 by the Technical University of Hanover .

He was a member of the board of the German Road Construction Association for 12 years and took part in international congresses, including a congress in Washington in 1930. He wrote about 70 scientific articles, mainly as contributions to professional journals.

The Artur Speck Prize has been awarded annually by the State Association of Saxony of the VSVI (Association of Road Construction and Transport Engineers) since 2002 .
