Henry B. Eyring

Henry Bennion Eyring (born May 31, 1933 in Princeton , New Jersey ) is 2nd Counselor to the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

Eyring is the second of three sons of the theoretical chemist Henry Eyring and his wife Mildred, nee. Bennion. With his wife Kathleen, geb. Johnson, he has six children.

Eyring studied at the University of Utah and then earned a PhD in business administration from Harvard University . From 1971 to 1977 he was president of Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho (now BYU-Idaho) and served from September 1980 to April 1985 and from September 1992 to January 2005 as Commissioner of Education of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day (Holy CES ). On April 6, 1985, he was called to serve as second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric . He was called to the First Quorum of Seventy on October 3, 1992, and ordained an apostle on April 6, 1995 .

Eyring was called to serve on October 6, 2007 following the death of James E. Faust , 2nd Counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley . After President Hinckley's death, his successor, Thomas S. Monson , elected him to be his first counselor. In this office he was confirmed by the entire church membership on the occasion of the general conference on April 5, 2008. After the death of Thomas S. Monson, Eyring was installed on January 14, 2018 as 2nd counselor to the successor to President Russell M. Nelson .
