Russell Marion Nelson Sr. (born September 9, 1924 ) is an American Church leader and the 17th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . Before he became an apostle, he was an internationally recognized cardiology - surgeon . He has been an Apostle since 1984 and has been the oldest living Apostle and the longest serving apostle.

Early life

Russell M. Nelson was born in Salt Lake City on September 9, 1924 . His parents were Marion C. Nelson (1897–1990) and F. Edna Nelson ( née Anderson; 1893–1983). In his teens he went to LDS Business College (also high school ) and became an assistant secretary in a bank. Nelson was on the high school football team but didn't want to get injured, so he was constantly replaced. Nelson's parents were not active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his youth . But they sent him to Sunday school. He was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was sixteen. In part, this was thanks to Joseph Fielding Smith , the father of his friend Douglas Smith.

Education and training

Nelson attended the University of Utah , where he graduated from BA and MD in 1945 and 1947. He then trained in surgery and medicine at the University of Minnesota . There he conducted research in the group that developed the first heart-lung machine and which was used in 1950 for the first human heart operation. After two years of service in the United States Army, where he served in Korea , he moved to Harvard Medical School to complete his training.

Career

Nelson returned to Salt Lake City in 1955 and accepted a post at the University of Utah Medical School . There he built his own heart-lung machine and performed the first open heart surgery in Utah. This was the first of many successes Nelson had in his profession. In March 1956 he successfully operated a Fallot tetralogy . The patient was a four year old girl. In 1960 he successfully performed a heart valve operation. In this operation, his patient was a Mormon patriarch. In 1968 his surgical skills were tested and he did very well. Nelson also operated on later President of the Church, Spencer W. Kimball .

Church service

In addition to his medical work, Nelson is also a church leader. Before he was ordained an apostle, he was a stake president for six years. Nelson also served as Sunday School president for eight years and was a regional representative of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for four years .

Nelson was called an Apostle by Spencer W. Kimball , whose personal physician he was for many years. Nelson was accepted as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 7, 1984. He was ordained an apostle on April 12, 1984 by Gordon B. Hinckley . Nelson took the place of the late LeGrand Richards .

In 2009 Nelson and his wife traveled to Africa to support the Church there. He and his wife were attacked in Mozambique . In 2011 he also visited Kenya.

From 2007 to 2015, Nelson was an advisor to the Church Educational System leadership circle . His place was later taken by Dallin H. Oaks .

After Boyd K. Packer's death , Nelson became the Church's senior apostle and became President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . Nelson was ordained president on July 15, 2015 by Thomas S. Monson .

Nelson made his first international trip to Central America after his ordination.

He was installed as the 17th President of the Church on January 14, 2018.

Eastern Europe

Nelson was an Apostle in charge of the Church in Eastern Europe. He organized the first meeting of Church representatives with government officials in Bulgaria . He also blessed several Eastern European countries.

His only son, Russell M. Nelson Jr., served as a missionary in Russia. In 2011 Nelson traveled to Russia to organize the Church's First Stake.

Central Asia

In August 2003, Nelson was the first Apostle to visit Kazakhstan . He spoke to government officials there and dedicated the land to the gospel.

China

Nelson learned Mandarin at a request from Kimball . In 1995 he and Neal A. Maxwell visited the Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Li Lanqing .

Meeting with Pope

Nelson met with Pope Francis in the Vatican on March 9, 2019 . He is the first LDS Church President to meet with a Pope.

family

Nelson married Dantzel White on August 31, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple . They became the parents of nine daughters and one son. Dantzel died unexpectedly on February 12, 2005.

On April 6, 2006, he married Wendy L. Watson, a professor at Brigham Young University , in the Salt Lake Temple .
