Neal A. Maxwell

Neal Ash Maxwell (born July 6, 1926 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † July 21, 2004 there ) was an American scholar, teacher and church leader. He served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1981 until his death.

life and career

Neal Maxwell was born in Salt Lake City. His parents were Clarence Maxwell and Emma Ash. Maxwell attended Granite High School . During World War II , he served in the infantry of the United States Army (77th Division). There he took part in the Battle of Okinawa . After the war, he served as a Mormon missionary in Canada for two years .

While studying at the University of Utah , he met Colleen Hinckley. Shortly afterwards he went on a mission. After the mission, he became engaged to Colleen and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 22, 1950. They became the parents of four children and 24 grandchildren.

Maxwell received a bachelor's and master's degree in political science from the University of Utah . From 1952 to 1956 he worked in Washington, DC , first for the government and then as an assistant to Senator Wallace F. Bennett .

Maxwell was a professor of political science at the University of Utah. He also had a lot of administrative duties at the university.

Church service

From 1959 to 1962, Maxwell served as bishop for the university ward. He also served on the young men’s advisory board and program to develop teaching materials for the Church for the next five years.

In 1969 he was called to serve as the regional ambassador of the Twelve Apostles. From 1970 to 1974 he was the head of the Church Educational System . This got its current name under him.

Maxwell became a General Authority of the Church in 1974. He became an assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . When that position was eliminated in 1976, he was seventy in the Church.

Maxwell was ordained an apostle by Nathan Eldon Tanner on July 23, 1981 , after Gordon B. Hinckley became a counselor in the First Presidency . He was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 3, 1981.

Like all General Authorities, Maxwell was responsible for the development of a Church stake. His stake was the Aba Nigeria Stake, one of the first stake where the leadership of the Church was all African.

Maxwell wrote about 30 books on religion. He was well known for his large vocabulary and linguistic brilliance. His highly literary speeches were a challenge for the translators. The translators categorized all speeches during general conference into levels one through five. All of the speeches were at levels one to four, only Maxwell's speech was the only one at level five.

Gordon B. Hinckley praised his linguistic talent at his funeral.

Maxwell received many honorary degrees during his time as an apostle.

Maxwell died of leukemia in Salt Lake City . He was diagnosed with the disease in 1996, eight years before his death. He was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery. His place in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was from Dieter F. Uchtdorf accepted. The Institute for Religious Texts at Brigham Young University was renamed the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship in his honor.
