Heber J. Grant

Heber Jeddy Grant (born November 22, 1856 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † May 14, 1945 ) was the 7th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

Life

His father Jedediah Morgan Grant was Brigham Young's 2nd Counselor and died when Heber Jeddy Grant was nine days old. The boy was raised by his mother Rachel Ridgeway Ivins Grant and proved to be very determined. At the age of 15 he found his first job in an insurance office as an accountant and policy writer. He also worked in a bank. He always sought further training and soon made a name for himself in banking and insurance.

Grant served in various offices in the Church until he was ordained an apostle in 1882 . In 1916, as the senior apostle, he became the president of the quorum. From 1883 to 1884 he visited Indian settlements and organized the missionary work. In 1901 Grant established and presided over the first mission in Japan. From 1904 to 1906 he presided over the British and European missions.

Following the death of Joseph F. Smith , Grant was ordained and ordained as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 23, 1918. In 1940 he suffered a stroke. In 1942 he made his last public appearance and died on May 14, 1945 in Salt Lake City.

Presidency

From October 3 to 5, 1924, he presided over the first general conference broadcast on the radio. In 1926 he initiated the creation of religious institutes . In 1930 the church celebrated its 100th anniversary under his leadership. In response to the Great Depression, he launched the Church's so-called security plan in 1936, which later became the welfare program.

Heber J. Grant dedicated three temples in his life : Laie , Hawaii; Cardston , Alberta, Canada; Mesa , Arizona.
