Joseph Fielding Smith (born November 13, 1838 in Missouri , † November 19, 1918 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was the sixth prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (" Mormons ") from 1901 to 1918 . To distinguish him from his son of the same name, he is also called Joseph F. Smith senior .

Smith was the first prophet to be born into the Church. He was the nephew of the first prophet and founder of that Church, Joseph Smith . Joseph F. Smith's father, Hyrum Smith, was an older brother of the founder. Hyrum and Joseph were murdered by an angry lynching mob in 1844. Joseph F. Smith devoted his life to the Church after his mother died in 1852. His main goal as a prophet was that by the polygamy bring battered reputation of the Church in the public back in order, the secret practice of polygamy more to prevent what many fundamentalists split off or excommunicated were. He also tried to refute allegations against the church because of its founding history. He built several sites in New York, Missouri, and Illinois for people to learn about the Church. He expanded the missionary work of the Church and improved the training system within the fellowship. He also announced the Second Manifesto .
