Thomas Spencer Monson (born August 21, 1927 in Salt Lake City , Utah ; † January 2, 2018 there ) was an American clergyman and since February 3, 2008 the 16th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , commonly referred to as Mormons .

Life

Thomas S. Monson was the son of G. Spencer Monson and his wife Gladys Condie. He earned a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Utah and later a master's degree in business administration from Brigham Young University . From 1948 Monson worked for the newspaper Deseret News in the advertising department and was later chairman of the board of directors for 19 years. He served in the Navy during World War II.

With his wife Frances Beverly Johnson Monson (born October 27, 1927, † May 17, 2013) he had three children and six grandchildren.

Monson has always been interested in youth. So he got involved with the Boy Scouts of America , where he had been on the federal board since 1969. He was also active in the Utah Printing Industry Association, of which he was Chairman, and the United States Printing Industry Association.

Church activity

Monson was called as a volunteer bishop (church leader) in a large Salt Lake City ward with approximately 1,000 members at the age of 22. He became a volunteer counselor to a stake president at age 27, served as president of the Canadian Mission from 1959 to 1962, and was ordained an apostle on October 10, 1963 .

Monson felt particularly close to East Germany, as he was called in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, among other things, to look after the German members of the Church behind the “ Iron Curtain ”. The permission of the SED regime to build the Freiberg temple in Saxony goes back to his efforts .

He served as the second counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson and President Howard W. Hunter . Monson served as the first counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley from March 12, 1995 until his death on January 27, 2008 . At this point, as the senior apostle, he took over as scheduled to lead the Church after the first presidency was terminated. On February 3, 2008, he was ordained and ordained as the 16th President of Latter-day Saint Church of Jesus Christ.
