Artur Talvik (born June 13, 1964 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician, film producer and screenwriter.

Life

Artur Talvik was born as the son of TV journalist Mati Talvik (* 1942) and his wife, TV announcer Alice Talvik (* 1940).

Artistic career

After completing school in Tallinn and serving in the Soviet Army , Artur Talvik completed his studies in dramaturgy in 1988 at the stage school of the Estonian Academy of Music and Drama (then Tallinn State Conservatory ). Until 1992 he worked as an actor in the Tallinn State Puppet Theater. He then worked briefly as a reporter for the private radio station Kuku Raadio .

From the beginning of the 1990s, Talvik made a name for himself as a producer of feature and documentary films and as a screenwriter in Estonia. His productions include the German-Estonian joint production Schnauze voll (2005) and the Estonian feature film Detsembrikuumus (2008) about the failed communist coup of 1924 .

Political activity

In the 2011 election, Talvik ran for the first time as a non-party candidate on the list of the Estonian Greens for parliament ( Riigikogu ) . However, he could not win a mandate.

Four years later, in the 2015 parliamentary election , he ran as a non-party leading candidate for the newly founded Estonian Free Party ( Eesti Vabaerakond ) . He won one of the party's eight parliamentary seats and officially joined it in March 2017. In April of the same year, he replaced the long-time politician Andres Herkel as party leader. After disagreements about the further development of the party, he renounced the chairmanship in 2018 and resigned. On August 22, 2018, he also resigned from the parliamentary group and was a non-attached member of the Riigikogu until the next election.

Private

Artur Talvik is married to the doctor Anneli Kalle-Talvik. He has two daughters, two sons and two stepchildren.
