Andres Herkel (born August 14, 1962 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician.

Early years

Andres Herkel attended school in Saku until 1980 . He graduated from Tartu State University in 1985 with a degree in psychology . From 1985 to 1989 he was employed as a research assistant. In 1998 he obtained a master's degree in history from the University of Tartu with a thesis on early Indian philosophy .

Politician

With the end of the Soviet Union and the Estonian freedom movement at the end of the 1980s, Herkel also became politically active. From 1989 to 1991 he was chairman of the "Association Res Publica" ( Ühendus Res Publica ), which he co-founded , a forum for anti-communist Estonian intellectuals that maintained close contacts with Soviet dissidents.

At the end of the 1980s, Herkel made a special contribution to establishing free media in Estonia. After journalistic work, Herkel was media advisor to the parliamentary administration from 1993 to 1999. From 1994 to 2000 and from 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the supervisory board of Estonian public radio and television .

In March 1999, Herkel was elected for the first time as a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for the conservative "Fatherland Union" ( Isamaaliit ) , to which he has been a member of the past. From 2009 to 2011 was the Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . He particularly campaigned for the observance of human rights in Azerbaijan .

Estonian Free Party

In 2014, Herkel and like-minded people fell out with the leadership of the Isamaaliit successor party IRL over the political course. In September 2014, as a spin-off from the IRL, they founded their own center-right party, the "Estonian Free Party" ( Eesti Vabaerakond ). Herkel was elected its chairman.

In the parliamentary elections on March 1, 2015, the party was able to overcome the five percent hurdle straight away and entered parliament with eight members.

In April 2017 Andres Herkel was replaced by Artur Talvik in the office of Eesti Vabaerakond party leader . After leaving Talvik, Herkel returned to the post in May 2018, but was replaced by Kaul Nurm at the end of September of the same year .

Private life

Andres Herkel is married to Kaie Herkel (* 1959), who is also politically active. The couple has a son.
