The Artushof is a listed building in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund . The building on the west side of the Alter Markt on the corner of Mühlenstrasse is 15 meters wide and 17 meters deep.

As early as 1316, a so-called “ Artushof ” was built at this point in the old market . The Artus Courts, which were built in the 14th century, were primarily found in the cities of the Hanseatic League . They served the urban upper classes as a social meeting point. It is said to have been named after King Arthur . The Artushof Stralsund served to host official receptions and celebrations and was used to accommodate important guests of the city. The first written mention from 1541 reports on the "Khonig Arendshoff". The inn belonging to the Artushof was only leased to long -established and respected Stralsund citizens for management purposes. The Stralsundische Zeitung reported in 1930 that in 1499 hectoliters of beer were served in Artushof in 2020.

Over the centuries the house housed u. a. the Duke Philip I of Pomerania and the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf , who moved into quarters here for two weeks on October 10, 1630. In 1678 a festival was held in honor of the Great Elector who had conquered the city.

On June 12, 1680, this building fell victim to the great city fire. It was not until 1702 that the Swedish city guard was rebuilt here . This was followed by military use of the building by Swedes, Danes, French and Saxons, and finally from 1815 Prussia. In January 1900, the representative of the Berlin Wertheim Group , Drucker , bought the building. The Stralsundische Zeitung wrote on 14 January 1900 by the plans of Georg Wertheim , who once founded his company in Stralsund that Wertheim "(...) intends to build a large, corresponding all requirements of commercial building at this point after the takeover of the building. It should also be reported that of course the old office building of the company, which is located directly next to the Hauptwache, will remain as such and will be connected to the new building to be built. ”However, these plans were not implemented, but after the demolition in 1911 the following year a hotel was built, which was operated by Franz Klamm. The building, which can still be seen today, served as such until 1942. That year, the Städtische Sparkasse moved into it. Operating under this name until April 1945, the branch of Stadtbank Stralsund was opened on August 1st at the same location. After various name changes, the Sparkasse moved into the “trade union building” ( Alter Markt 4 ) across the street in February 1956 . After being used by the Pommersche Volksbank in 2010, the Artushof was once again used as a restaurant in the original sense of the word.

The Artushof is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”. It is entered with the number 9 in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund .
