Arundhati Bhattacharya (born March 18, 1956 in Calcutta ) is an Indian bank manager and has been the chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI) since 2013 .

Life

Arundhati Bhattacharya comes from the Indian upper class caste of Brahmins . She grew up in Bhilai , where her father worked as a manager at Bhilai Steel Plant . After attending St. Xavier's School in Bokaro , she studied English literature at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Since she was not admitted to the medical school, she passed a bank entrance exam in 1975 and started as a probationary officer at the State Bank of India (SBI) in 1977 . During her career she worked at SBI in various functions and at various locations, including a. also in New York City . In 2005 Bhattacharya took over the management of the regional organization of SBI in the state of Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow .

In October 2013, Bhattacharya - succeeding Pratip Chaudhuri - was appointed by the Indian government as head of the state bank for three years; it is the first time in the company's history that this position is only held for a limited time. The company has over 200,000 employees in over 15,000 branches.
