Arvin Boolell (born May 26, 1953 ) is a politician from Mauritius .

biography

Arvin Boolell is the son of Sir Satcam Boolell and the cousin of Anil Gayan , who were both foreign ministers of Mauritius. After attending school, he studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons at the National University of Ireland , where he earned a Bachelor of Obstetrics (BAO), which is only awarded in Ireland , and the internationally recognized Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). After completing his studies, he worked as a surgeon in Wales and New Zealand .

His political career began in 1987 when he was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Labor Party of Mauritius (PTr) as a member of the National Assembly, in which he represented constituency 11 Rose Belle / Vieux Grand Port . In the elections of 1991, 1995, 2000 and 2005 he was re-elected in this constituency. He was first appointed to government by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam as Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources in December 1995 and served in the cabinet until Ramgoolam's term ended in September 2000.

After the election victory of the electoral alliance “Social Alliance”, consisting of the MLP, the Maurition Party of Xavier-Luc Duval and several smaller parties, he was reappointed to the government in July 2005 by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam as Minister for Agricultural Industry and Fisheries. In this position he was also the spokesman for the group of sugar-producing countries within the ACP countries and in this position he advocated the perception and strengthening of the group's interests in the European Union . On the other hand, he advocated a stop of illegal fishing in order to strengthen the local economy.

As part of a government reshuffle, he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade on September 13, 2008. In this function, he chaired the meeting of a Joint Public-Private Sector Committee in August 2009, which deals with trade in the region and cooperation within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa ( COMESA) and the South African Development Community (SADC) .
