Satcam Boolell

Sir Satcam Boolell (born September 11, 1920 in New Grove , Grand Port District , † March 23, 2006 in Curepipe , Plaines Wilhems District ) was a politician of the Parti Travailliste from Mauritius , who was Foreign Minister between 1986 and 1990.

Life

Boolell was elected for the first time to a member of the Legislative Council (Mauritius Legislative Council) in the elections of August 27, 1953 in the constituency of Moka-Flacq . In 1959 he became Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the Government of the British Colony of Mauritius, whose chief minister had been Seewoosagur Ramgoolam since September 26, 1961 , and held this office until 1967. In the August 7, 1967 elections, he was led by Ramgoolam Independence Party elected member of the Legislative Assembly and represented in this constituency 10 Montagne Blanche and Grand River South East . He was then Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs between 1967 and 1968.

After Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom on March 12, 1968, Boolell was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Cooperatives in the government of the now Prime Minister Ramgoolam and held this office until 1974. After a cabinet reshuffle, he served from 1974 until the end of Ramgoolam served as Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment on June 16, 1982. For his services he was beaten on August 2, 1977 to the Knight Bachelor and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". In 1982 he replaced Ramgoolam as chairman of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant / Travailliste (MSM / PT).

In 1983 Boolell was appointed by the new Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth as Minister for Economic Planning and Development in his cabinet and held this ministerial office until 1984. After two years out of the government, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Justice Minister in 1986 by Prime Minister Jugnauth and held these offices until 1990. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly until the September 15, 1991 elections.

His son Arvin Boolell and his nephew Anil Gayan were both foreign ministers.
