Arvo Niitenberg

Arvo Niitenberg (born September 27, 1934 in Tallinn , †  July 16, 2003 in Toronto , Canada ) was an Estonian politician.

Life

Arvo Niitenberg fled to Sweden with his parents in 1944 before the Soviet occupation of Estonia . In 1949 he emigrated to Canada . There he graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1958 .

From 1959 to 1992 Niitenberg was employed by the Canadian state energy company Ontario Hydro , among other things in the construction and operation of thermal power plants . From 1969 to 1975 he managed various power plants. From 1972 to 1992 he was a member of the Ontario Hydro board of directors and vice president of the company.

When Estonian regained independence, Arvo Niitenberg returned to his homeland as a politician and energy policy advisor. From June to October 1992 he held the post of Minister without Portfolio in the government of Prime Minister Tiit Vähi . From October 1992 to November 1994 Niitenberg was energy minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Laar , then until April 1995 Minister without Portfolio in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andres Tarand .

From 1995 Niitenberg served as Estonian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He also made a name for himself as an expert in the disposal of Soviet nuclear waste in Estonia.
