Ary van Leeuwen

Ary van Leeuwen (born May 25, 1875 in Arnhem , † 1953 in Los Angeles ) was a Dutch flautist .

Ary van Leeuwen received a thorough and varied musical education. As the main instrument he chose the flute and was among other things. a. instructed by Joachim Andersen . His artistic career began in 1889 in the Volkspalast Orchestra in Amsterdam , where he quickly rose to become the first flutist. Two years later he solidified his career in various first-class orchestras in Europe and America. From 1903 to 1920 he worked as a solo flutist at the Vienna Court Opera , where Gustav Mahler had appointed him. He was the first flutist to use a silver flute in an Austrian orchestra. At the same time he held the post of professor at the conservatory.

Leeuwen emigrated to America in 1924 and became the first flautist in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra . He stayed there until 1938. He then went to California and taught at the University of Southern California.

In 1903 van Leeuwen's edition series "Pearls of Old Masters" was created, which he published until 1933 at Zimmermann Musikverlag and which was also a great success in the USA .
