The Arzler Pitzeklamm , also Pitzenklamm , is a gorge of the Pitze river in the municipality of Arzl in the Pitztal in Tyrol .

Location and characteristics

The approximately one kilometer long gorge forms the lowest section of the Pitztal up to the point where the Pitze flows into the Inn . It is bordered at the top ( 830  m above sea level ) by a road bridge to Wald im Pitztal and below ( 711  m above sea level ) by the Arlbergbahn railway line on the banks of the Inn. The Arzler Pitzeklamm formed after the Würm glacial period through the erosion of the Pitze. In the transition area between limestone rock and moraine gravel , steep, inaccessible slopes were created on both sides. The vegetation is by rare, varied forest communities affected, including sycamore - ash woods are and Linden -Mischwälder. It benefits from high humidity and unstable soil conditions.

In 1986, the newly built trail through the gorge after was Luis Trenker , whose father was born in Arzl, Luis Trenker named. At the entrance to the gorge, a pedestrian suspension bridge has connected the villages of Arzl and Wald since 1995 . The structure, initially called Pitzenklammbrücke , has been named Benni-Raich-Brücke since 2005, after Benni Raich, who was born in Arzler . It has a wingspan of 137.7 m. With a height of 94 m it is the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Europe and is also used for bungee jumping .

Protection status

The landscape protection area Arzler Pitzeklamm created in 2003 corresponds with 31.2 hectares to the Natura 2000 area Arzler Pitzeklamm recognized in 2004 . It is part of the Kaunergrat Nature Park and runs on both sides of the Pitze from the Benni-Raich bridge to the railway bridge on the Inn. The area is 80% forested and 12% is water. It is partly privately owned and partly owned by the Republic of Austria. Part of the area is the Arzler Pitzeklamm natural forest reserve , which extends over an area of ​​19.5 hectares.
