The Kaunergrat is a mountain range of almost 30 kilometers in the Ötztal Alps in Tyrol . The Kaunergrat is the middle of the three ridges extending northward from the ice-covered Weißkamm and thus lies between the Glockturmkamm in the west and the Geigenkamm in the east. Its peaks are both steeper and higher and therefore more glaciated than those of the two neighboring ridges.

In the east the Kaunergrat is bordered by the Pitztal , in the west by the Kaunertal . It begins in the south at the glaciated Ölgrubenjoch ( 3,044  m above sea level ), in the north it ends at the Inn Valley. The Kaunergrat extends over the municipal area of the municipalities of Arzl im Pitztal , Wenns , Jerzens , Fließ , Prutz , Faggen , Kaunerberg , Kauns , Kaunertal and St. Leonhard im Pitztal . Is located in the area since 1999 of the Nature Park Kaunergrat .

Most of the 39 three-thousand-meter peaks of the Kaunergrat often have steep slopes over 500 meters high and sharp ridges, which are otherwise rather rare in the primary rock . The highest peak is the Watzespitze ( 3532  m above sea level ), probably the most prominent peak in the Kaunergrat. The extremely rugged Seekogel ( 3357  m above sea level ) is considered to be the technically most difficult summit .

Other important peaks are the Vordere Ölgrubenspitze ( 3456  m above sea level ), the Rostizkogel ( 3392  m above sea level ), the Rofelewand ( 3353  m above sea level ) and the Verpeilspitze ( 3423  m above sea level ).

The end point and, so to speak, the “north pillar” of the Kaunergrat is the Hohe Aifnerspitze ( 2786  m above sea level ) , which towers south of the Kreuzjöchl .

  1. Seekarlesschneid-Nordwestpfeiler (V +) with H. Klier , W. Purtscheller and W. Gruber 1946
  2. Rofelewand north ridge (still unrepeatable as a route today)
