The Kaunergrathütte is an Alpine Club hut belonging to the Mainz section of the German Alpine Club . It is located in the Ötztal Alps south of the Verpeilspitze and northeast of the Watzespitze , the main summit of the Kaunergrat , in the western area of the municipality of St. Leonhard im Pitztal near the border with the municipality of Kaunertal . The hut is the highest hut in the Pitztal and is located about 200 meters below the Madatschjoch , a transition into the Kaunertal . The hut does not have a material ropeway .
history
In 1903 the hut was built by the Graz Academic Section of the Austrian Alpine Club . In the past decades the hut has been expanded and rebuilt several times. After 100 years, in 2003, the Mainz section of the German Alpine Club took over the hut and continued the fundamental renovation of the mountaineering accommodation.
Approaches
The hut can be reached in three different ways from the Pitztal . The easiest ascent leads from Plangeross to the hut in 3½ hours. Another possibility of ascent leads from the Rifflsee , which can be reached by cable car from Mandarfen , via the Cottbuser Höhenweg in 3 to 4 hours to the hut. Another ascent variant leads from Trenkwald over the Neururer Alpe , the Mittelberglessee , on the Saßen and over the Steinbockjoch on the southern spur of the Parstleswand . The latter ascent takes about 5½ hours.
