The Bliggspitze is a mountain of the Kaunergrat , a ridge of the Ötztal Alps . The Bliggspitze is at a height of 3453  m above sea level. A. after the Watzespitze the second highest mountain on this ridge. The area around the mountain is heavily glaciated . In the west, in the direction of the Kaunertal , lies the Bliggferner , in the east the Hintere Eiskastenferner and to the northeast, the Mittlere Eiskastenferner , a hanging glacier, is directly adjacent to the summit structure. In the south, however, is the Vordere Ölgrubenferner . In earlier times the mountain was called Blickspitze and it lives up to its name because it allows a comprehensive view of the Kaunertal and the peaks of the Weißkamm alike.

Routes

Routes lead from the east from the Pitztal , from the west from the Kaunertal and over the ridges to the summit. All routes as a high tour require mountaineering skills and ice equipment.

  • Normal route : over the Ölgrubenferner, the Bliggscharte , the Bliggferner and the west flank and finally over the north ridge to the summit.
  • Direct south ridge from the Taschach valley

Danger situation

The thawing of the permafrost soils in the Alps destabilizes the mountain slopes, also in the vicinity of the Gepatsch reservoir . The slope of the Bliggferner slid 20 centimeters a day in 2007, increasingly tearing open the glaciated slope structure. This increased the likelihood of a sudden slide into the reservoir. As a result, a tidal wave would have to be expected that would overcome the dam; in the worst case, damage to the dam itself could also be expected. In 1963 there was a similar accident at the Vajont dam in Italy , in which almost 2,000 people died.
