Ash Creek (meteorite)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ash Creek meteorite fall occurred on February 15, 2009 north of Waco , near the city of West ( Texas , USA ) around 11:03 am local time.

Observations

The fall of the fireball was accidentally recorded by a television camera in Austin, Texas and witnessed by many eyewitnesses. The sonic boom of the bolide could also be heard in the vicinity of Waco. At first it was assumed that it was satellite debris from the satellite collision of February 10, 2009 , but based on the orbit data this could soon be ruled out as the cause. The possible fall area could be narrowed down very quickly and numerous people went in search of fragments of the meteorite.

Finds

The first finds were soon reported. A dog also retrieved a meteorite fragment from its owner. In total, over 260 fragments with a total weight of around 11 kg have been recovered so far. The largest piece was found near Aquilla ( Hill County (Texas) ) and weighs 1.7 kg.

Type

The Meteoritical Society examined finds and classified the meteorite as a common chondrite of the L6 type. The official name Ash Creek was given to the meteorite after the name of an area near the first fragment found.
