history

West Street in Ashburton

During the English Civil War, Ashburton was briefly a refuge for royal troops who fled near Bovey Tracey after being defeated by General Thomas Fairfax . It was also the first place where an Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidate was elected to public office. The candidate was Alan Hope , a local landlord who was elected to Ashburton City Council in 1989. He then became deputy mayor and a little later mayor of the town.
