The Official Monster Raving Loony Party ( OMRLP for short ) is a British party that has participated in general elections since it was founded in 1983 . Although she deliberately went public with seemingly bizarre programs, some of her early demands have now been implemented, such as pet passports, abolishing curfew in pubs or lowering the voting age to 18 years.

The party was founded in 1983 by Screaming Lord Sutch , who had been politically active with the "National Teenage Party" since the 1960s. Alan "Howlin 'Laud" Hope has been party chairman since Sutch's death in 1999, until 2002 together with his cat, Cat Mandu .

history

Party founder Sutch had been politically active since the early 1960s and ran repeatedly in various elections and by-elections. He first appeared in 1963 with his National Teenage Party, but he also participated in other similar electoral alliances. The party maintained official contacts with the comparable Canadian Parti Rhinocéros ("Rhinoceros Party "), which also took part in election campaigns with humorous and absurd demands and election promises. A prominent member of the party is Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel , who ran in 1981 in the constituency of Crosby in the English county of Merseyside. Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F'tang-F'tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel, whose name was inspired by a sketch by the British comedian group Monty Python , had the Cambridge University Raving Loony Society founded, which merged into the OMRLP and influenced their choice of name.

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party has had some success at the community level. In some areas it formed the first serious opposition to the parties that had dominated there for decades. Up until his suicide, Lord Sutch was the longest serving, but also the most unsuccessful British party leader.

The popularity of the party is due to the fact that there are only constituency MPs in the House of Commons and by-elections are held after the departure or death of one of the MPs. These by-elections are then broadcast nationwide and all candidates are shown on the pedestal with the election officer reading the results aloud. Only the names of the MPs are read out, the party affiliation is then read by an off-speaker. Sometimes bizarre scenes result, especially since the candidates of the OMRLP usually appear in grotesque costumes.

In the general election of 2010 joined DJ of the pirate station Radio Sutch , Colin Dale, to the party. He received 856 votes (1.8%) in his constituency.

requirements

The election program of the OMRLP takes up real topics in a satirical way. In the 2005 general election she called for:

  • Abolition of income tax, as it was only introduced temporarily during the Napoleonic Wars , but was never lifted again. This requirement has been part of the program since 1983.
  • Backfilling of the British side of the Eurotunnel
  • Introduction of a 99 pence coin "to solve the annoying problem of change."
  • The refusal to join the euro area ; the rest of Europe should be invited to accept the British pound as its currency.
  • Drivers are allowed to go straight on roundabouts when there is no other traffic as "it would be safer to drive through Milton Keynes ".
  • Traffic cops who are “too stupid” for normal police work are to be retrained to become clergy.
  • MPs are expected to waive their £ 118,000 flat fee. This is then distributed to the poor and needy "so that they can waste it instead."
  • Every parliamentarian in whose constituency a school sports area is sold should instead provide his own garden so that the children can have physical education there.
  • All motorways are to be converted into express bike paths.
  • Traffic monitoring with flash units will be abolished. Instead, devices are being purchased that automatically brake cars to the speed limit as soon as they pass the device.
