history
Under British rule, Ashoknagar Kalyanagarh was the site of the British Royal Air Force during World War II . The place that Ashoknagar became Kalyanagarh was an RAF airfield known as Baigachi Airfield. There are still four RAF hangars as remnants of a bygone era. After the Second World War, the airfield and hangars were closed. After India's independence, a planned town was built on the site of the airfield.
Demographics
The city's population is 121,592 according to the 2011 census. Ashoknagar Kalyangarh has a gender ratio of 986 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 92.0% in 2011. Almost 97% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2% are Muslims and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 7.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
