The Asimba (also Assimba ) is with 3205 m the highest mountain in the northeastern slope of the Tigray Mountains in the Tigray region in Ethiopia . It is located in the woreda Irob in the tribal area of the Hassabella- Irob . The massif consists mainly of light red granite , which geologically belongs to the African base.
There are three peaks that are 200 m apart. The main peak is difficult to climb, but the other two are easy.
The Asimba is well known throughout Ethiopia because it has been a refuge for the persecuted for centuries. During the wars of liberation at the time of the Derg military dictatorship, it served primarily as a place of refuge for the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (IHAPA). Today an access road leads to the Jahooddaga pass (about 2920 m , location ), from where the Asimba peaks can be climbed with a walk of 90 minutes. The Asimba offers a unique view and is a habitat for a rich flora and fauna, including mountain leopards . The stocks of ancient tree juniper ( Juniperus procera ) are also impressive .
