AskoziaPBX is now a proprietary firmware for telephone systems . It is a spin-off from the m0n0wall project and uses the Asterisk private branch exchange (PBX) software to implement telephone system functionality.

Originally published under a limited BSD license , AskoziaPBX from version 2.1 is only published under a commercial license. In addition, however, a “diet” version is offered for test purposes. This has full functionality, but is limited to 30 days.

history

AskoziaPBX was started in 2007 by Michael Iedema as a proof-of-concept project at the Ostfalia University in Wolfenbüttel .

The aim of the project was to show the feasibility of an embedded telephone system firmware based on open source software that offers a high degree of user friendliness .

AskoziaPBX has been further developed by Benjamin-Nicola Lüken and Sebastian Kaiser since 2011.

Askozia was acquired by 3CX in August 2017 . With the takeover, the AskoziaPBX was discontinued with immediate effect. License holders were offered a free 3CX license to enable continued operation of the telephone system.

Main functionality

AskoziaPBX is configured via a web-based user interface. It allows the configuration and networking of analog, ISDN and VoIP telephones. Telephone system features such as voicemail , conference calls , parking, forwarding , Fax2Mail and text-to-speech are supported. Further functionalities can be added through Asterisk Applications or the Call Flow Editor. The Call Flow Editor is an additional software module for AskoziaPBX that enables the user to create complex scenarios such as telephone queues and speech dialog systems.

AskoziaPBX runs on systems from 200 MHz and 64 MB RAM.

internationalization

The firmware and the project are internationalized . The configuration interface, voice prompts and notifications have been translated into many languages. English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, and Dutch are the most complete; with less complete translations also Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Danish and Swedish.

AskoziaPBX is used in over 175 countries.
