Asma Mohamed Abdalla (also: Asmaa Abdallah , Abdullah ; Arabic أسماء محمد عبدالله; * 1946 ) is a Sudanese diplomat and politician . In early September 2019, she became the first female foreign minister of Sudan in Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's cabinet .

Life and education

Abdalla was born in 1946. In 1971, after studying economics and political science, she graduated from Khartoum University .

Diplomatic career and exile

Before Umar al-Bashir came to power , Abdalla was an employee of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry. She worked as a diplomat in Morocco and was then appointed Ambassador of Sudan to Norway . After the military coup by al-Bashir in 1989, she was released. She then went into exile in Morocco, where she worked as a consultant for organizations such as the Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture . Some time later, she returned to Khartoum without being politically active there and opened a translation agency.

Protests in Sudan 2018-2019

During the protests in Sudan from 2018 to 2019 , Abdalla joined the opposition group Forces of Freedom and Change and became a member of the working group for foreign affairs.

Foreign Minister

At the beginning of September 2019, Abdalla was appointed Foreign Minister by the new Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
